How To Listen To Harrogate Community Radio On An Alexa Device...

What is Alexa?

Alexa is Amazon's virtual personal assistant. It lives within the Echo series of Smart Speakers that are in circulation – it is voice controlled and you will need the ‘Skill' ‘Harrogate Community Radio' within Alexa to stream the station.

‘Harrogate Community Radio' is the name of a ‘Skill' on the Amazon Marketplace – you will need to use this ‘Skill' to stream Harrogate Community Radio on your Alexa device.

There are three ways to install a ‘Skill' on your Alexa Device: you can read how to install a skill HERE. But, I will explain the easiest…

The easiest way is to request Alexa to install it with you voice – just say to it

Alexa, enable Harrogate Community Radio.

Once you have Harrogate Community Radio enabled as a Skill (it is HERE on Amazon dot co dot uk) – just ask Alexa…

Alexa, start Harrogate Community Radio.

… then, you will be able to listen to radio by the community of Harrogate, for the community of Harrogate.

How To Listen To Harrogate Community Radio On A SONOS Device...

Sonos is a what-you-see-what-you-get Smart Speaker. It works in tandem with Alexa and Google Assistant (if you want it to) or, as we do at Backhouse HQ, it can be used just from the Sonos App. In this explanation I will try and tell you how to play Harrogate Community Radio through the SONOS app.

I gave my wife a Sonos for her Birthday a few years ago – it is still going strong. Within the Sonos app, you will need the add-on plugin ‘Radio.Net' to stream the station. Here is how to install it; on iOS or Android, within the Sonos App you will need to go to the Settings pane…

  1. Open the Sonos app.
  2. From the Settings tab, tap Services.
  3. Under Music & Content, tap Add a Service.
  4. Tap the service you would like to add – in this case it is myTuner Radio.
  5. Tap Add to Sonos.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the music service account.
  7. Search for “Harrogate Community Radio” in the search Bar for SONOS and head to ‘Stations'.
  8. Play radio by the community for the community.

You will now be able to search for the station Harrogate Community Radio from within the Sonos App and from within the myTuner Radio plugin within the Sonos App. You do not need to create an account with myTuner Radio – it just does it automatically.

How To "Listen Again" To A Past Show On Harrogate Community Radio?

So, we have a Listen Again function on our website.

You can navigate this option in a couple of ways – but, most of the past broadcasts are up there for you to listen to again, digitally.

Method #1: Listen Again Page

If you head to our Listen Again page, on our site, you will be able to stream the most recent shows once again.

This is just in case you missed their original broadcast or a recent show really, really peaked your curiosity.

However, we realise this is not the most practical method – so there is another way…

Method #2: Per Show

If you navigate to a show's page you should see the option to visit the individual episode's page at the bottom of the page, after the text.

This is true of most shows – click on the individual episode and there will be an embedded player. It's good.

Method #3: Ol' Fashioned Search

There is a Search Function within the website that enables people to search out their favourite episode. We currently have around 1000 shows up on our site, so it is a lot to scroll through.

If you need to get specific then this is probably the best option.

Summing Up

If we have missed a show off from the listen again then please let us know – we are just volunteering humans at the end of the day and mistakes do happen. Raise a ticket by clicking to get to the Feedback Page, in the top-right of your menu and one of the Admin will get back to you.

How Do I Listen To Harrogate Community Radio On A Smart Speaker That Isn't SONOS or Alexa...

Well, there is always the Bluetooth, Airplay or other forms of Casting – We are now on the Ruark system too, if you are lucky enough to have a Ruark System, just search for Harrogate Community Radio.

However, most Smart Speakers have the ability to host the myTuner Radio app. It is a lightweight app that has a range of stations on (50k+). It is a great way of finding new content – although, I hope you will stay with HCR!

If, at worst, you can always cast using Bluetooth to the speaker. You would just need to access the station's site from the website and stream from there.

Meet Harrogate Community Radio

We are all volunteers on Harrogate Community Radio – we are trying to make Harrogate that bit better. If you want to sign up to learn how to make a show, we can guide you through the process; it will prove to be a worthwhile hobby.

After all, Utopias do not grow themselves.

If you do not like music on a show there will be a radically different show on afterwards. We also have you covered for spoken word; whether it is a short story or a recorded ramble in Yorkshire’s idyllic countryside. We are by your side.
