Ian Smith shows
Ian has been a soul and ska fan since the heydays of The Supremes, Edwin Starr, Millie and Trojan Records. More into Funk, Philli, Disco and general party going when he should have known better, he missed out on Wigan and Cleethorpes in the 70’s. He starting discovering the delights of northern soul after acquiring a number Kent Compilation LP’s in the early 80’s. Ian started going to northern nights in earnest in the late nineties and noughties. For years in self denial about collecting records and a lover of CD’s and MP3’s – something flipped in 2015 when a trip to a soul night in Norwich(?!) when he bought a few 60’s soul hits on vinyl. Five years on and significantly poorer he has amassed a substantial collection of northern soul records on the original vinyl issues.
Ian started to play records in public at DJ Trev’s Porkies Prime Cut Nights. Then in 2016 Harrogate Northern Soul Club took pity on him and gave him a resident DJ slot. Ian set up ’Soulful’ at St Roberts Club later that year and then in 2017 started Ilkley Soul Club – a full on northern soul club whose policy is strictly original vinyl. He has also been behind the reintroduction of northern soul nights at the Riley Smith in Tadcaster.
Ian started presenting shows at Harrogate Hospital Radio in 2019 and also presents The Soul Sound on that station – where the music is played from MP3 and CD. He has also been presenting a lockdown radio show (also on original vinyl) for Harrogate Vinyl Sessions called Get Down Saturday Night during the Covid internment.
Away from the dancefloor Ian is a regular fan of Leeds United and the most prized records in his collection are The Ballad of Billy Bremner on Columbia Demo and Leeds, Leeds, Leeds on the Chapter 5 label!
